Charlotte Race Report

Joe Gibbs Racing brought three of the fastest cars in the field to Charlotte Motor Speedway tonight, but when the longest race of the season had ended only Denny Hamlin would have a strong finish to reflect the team’s overall speed. Hamlin would finish fourth, while an accident ruined another strong night for Matt Kenseth, and an engine issue left Kyle Busch to finish 38th.

It was a night that included one of the most bizarre moments in racing and in sports in general, when a cable on the network television aerial camera broke on lap 123 and shot across the racetrack causing damage to several cars including the No. 18 of Kyle Busch as well as unfortunately injuring several fans. The race would have to be red flagged as NASCAR removed the cable from the track and allowed teams the opportunity to repair any damage to cars.

The All-Star Race Report

The annual NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race featured five race segments this year for a total of 90 laps. The first four segments were 20 laps each with a 10-lap sprint to the finish. Under the rules for this year’s race teams would come down pit road prior to the final 10-lap sprint in order of their average finish in the first four segments of the race. How they came off pit road would determine how they would line up for the final restart.

Matt Kenseth Tames Darlington

Matt Kenseth captured the win in what was a dominate night for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Kyle Busch dominated the majority of the race but a cut right rear tire on the last run of the night would leave him back in sixth, while Denny Hamlin returned to lead the 11 team to a second-place finish.

Talladega Race Report

Rain would play havoc all weekend at Talladega. First it cancelled NASCAR Sprint Cup Series qualifying and then it brought a red flag stop for over three and a half hours. The one thing you can still count on at Talladega Superspeedway however is “the big one”, when referencing major accidents that collect many cars and today’s Aaron’s 499 was certainly no different. Unfortunately for Joe Gibbs Racing “the big one” took out both Kyle Busch and Brian Vickers, who had relieved Denny Hamlin, on the day’s first caution.

Meanwhile Matt Kenseth, who spent the majority of his day at the front of the field, would get shuffled back in the draft on the green-white-checkered finish and was left with an eighth-place finish.

Richmond Race Report

Matt Kenseth would lead Joe Gibbs Racing with a seventh-place finish in tonight’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

Meanwhile separate accidents for Kyle Busch and Brian Vickers would leave them to finish 24th and 35th respectively.

Kenseth qualified his No. 20 Dollar General Toyota on the pole for the second consecutive week and for the second consecutive week he would also take his spot at the front of the field through the first quarter of the race. In fact, Kenseth would lead 94 of the first 100 laps. During a pit stop under caution on lap 112 NASCAR asked the 20 team to cut a small piece of metal off the car that was hanging by the right rear tire. The added work caused a slight delay leaving him to restart third. Kenseth would jump to second on the restart and hold that position through the midpoint of the race. The Dollar General Camry would regain its spot at the front of the field by lap 220. Kenseth would hold the lead until his teammate Busch managed to get around him on lap 254. The No. 20 Toyota would suddenly become tight through the center of the turns causing Kenseth to slip back to sixth until his crew could make adjustments to help it turn better again. That would come with just over 100 laps remaining when Kenseth would gain two spots on pit road and restart fourth. Unfortunately the outside lane for restarts proved problematic and he would fall back to seventh on the next run which fortunately was not long. Kenseth would come down pit road for four fresh tires and lined up ninth for the restart when several other cars elected to remain out on the track. Another caution just a few laps later would allow Kenseth to restart fourth with 57 laps to go. He would remain in the top five until a final caution set up a green white checker finish. Crew chief Jason Ratcliff made the call for four fresh tires which allowed Kenseth to restart eighth as several teams took no tires and others just two. It was a wild two-lap sprint to the finish and Kenseth managed to hang on for a solid seventh-place effort. His 140 laps led on the night led the field.
