Rain played havoc with today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Food City 500 from Bristol Motor Speedway. Not only did the wet weather delay the start by two hours and then cause a second lengthy delay a quarter of the way into the race, but it washed the rubber off the track challenging teams to keep up with the changing track conditions.
Joe Gibbs Racing brought three strong cars to the famed short track with Denny Hamlin earning the pole position during Friday’s qualifying session while Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch started third and seventh respectively. All three teams would also take their turn at the front of the field this afternoon, but when the checkered flag dropped Hamlin’s sixth-place finish would lead JGR, while separate accidents left Kenseth and Busch back in 13th and 29th respectively. Matt Kenseth led Joe Gibbs Racing with a 10th-place finish in today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Kobalt 400 from Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His teammates were not far behind with Kyle Busch earning an 11th-place finish and Denny Hamlin crossing the line in 12th. Read more
It was anything but the typical weather you might find in the desert of Arizona with rain Saturday night washing away all the tire rubber build up that give cars improved grip on the racetrack and cloud cover Sunday afternoon that made it increasingly difficult to make adjustments to aid a car’s handling.
All three Joe Gibbs Racing entries spent a good portion of the day racing inside the top ten but a rash of late cautions shuffled the field and when the checker flag waved Kyle Busch was the only one remaining in the top ten, earning a ninth-place finish in The Profit on CNBC 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. Meanwhile Matt Kenseth would take the checkered flag in 12th, while Denny Hamlin settled for 19th. Read more
