Martinsville Race Review

The tight racing conditions of the famed small track known as the paperclip was only one of the challenges facing Joe Gibbs Racing’s three teams in today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

Denny Hamlin would overcome two pit road speed penalties and appeared set to race for the win only to have his day ended early by an electrical failure caused by a broken master switch with just over 100 laps remaining. Meanwhile Kyle Busch would overcome an early spin caused by a right rear tire that was going flat to finish second and Joey Logano would battle through a pit road speeding penalty of his own to finish 16th.

“This year — the spring race is the one race where we did just not run well. We had some setup issues that we found in the car afterwards, after the race was over — some mistakes that we made with our setup. Basically, putting the wrong pieces in the wrong places. So, that is hopefully why we ran so bad in the spring where we finished decent but not great. And so hopefully that’s rectified. Honestly, we look forward to going back. Especially, as good as our short track program’s been here in the last few races — between New Hampshire and Richmond — that don’t necessarily correlate, but still it drives like a short track.”

Kansas Race Review

Going into this weekend many thought the newly repaved surface of Kansas Speedway could make today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Hollywood Casino 400 a bit of a wild card race in the Chase. Despite two days of testing to help teams acclimate to the new conditions it was clear from the outset that it would indeed become a matter of survival in a race that featured an unusually high number of spins and cautions.

Denny Hamlin would lead Joe Gibbs Racing with a 13th place finish, while Joey Logano came home 19th and Kyle Busch had his day ended early with a wreck on lap 181 and finished 31st.
