This Week at the Shop: Indy Prep

One of the biggest races of the season happens this weekend in Indianapolis, IN. Each of our three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams are busy preparing their primary and backup cars for this big event. The cars are stationed on laser-leveled setup plates and final checklists are sorted through. Tungsten weights are used during the setup process to achieve optimum balance.  They come in several weights and fit nicely inside the framerails.

That’s not the only thing going on at the shop this week. We work many weeks in advance in order to be prepared for every race. The Decal Source is busy wrapping Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 FedEx Office Toyota for Pocono next week.

Some crew members are working on the No. 20 Home Depot Toyota that Joey Logano drove to his first victory in 2009.  The car will be presented as a gift to Joey to commemorate his accomplishment as the youngest winner in NASCAR history.

Back in the gear and transmission room a lot of work is being done to prepare for Watkins Glen – the final road course on the NASCAR schedule. Because drivers will shift thousands of times during this race, the correct gear ratios must be selected and the transmissions must be able to withstand a beating.  Used transmissions are also lined up and ready to be cleaned and rebuilt for reuse.
